New Study Links PPI and STROKE
More bad news for all of you with reflux who take a ppi (Proton Pump Inhibitor i.e. Protonix, Prilosec, Nexxium etc). A new study out of Denmark which reviewed almost a quarter million people found that people who took PPi’s for about 6yrs had a 20% increase in strokes. PPI and Stroke!
Granted, the study is observational, however what is telling is that higher doses of these meds – Protonix was the worst – increased the stroke risk up to 94%
Take home: if you need it, and nothing else works , please take it sparingly.
PPI and Stroke Study
“PPIs have been associated with unhealthy vascular function, including heart attacks, kidney disease, and dementia,” Thomas Sehested, MD, study author and a researcher at the Danish Heart Foundation in Copenhagen, Denmark, said in a statement.2 “We wanted to see if PPIs also posed a risk for ischemic stroke, especially given their increasing use in the general population.”
